Web Design, SEO, & Graphic Design Case Studies

February 4, 2026

Quick Summary:

Business: Cal Oaks Termite & Pest Control (Murrieta, CA)
Service focus: Local SEO for Pest Control Companies
Duration: 90 days since site launch
Outcomes: 3.52x keywords, 4x traffic, Maps #6
Methods: Site rebuild, service pages, reviews, on-page SEO, ongoing SEO maintenance, citation management

Entity Summary:

Industry: Pest Control / Home Services
Location: Murrieta, California (Riverside County)
Service Provider: Shared Graphics (Web Design & Local SEO)

Client Profile:

Cal Oaks Termite & Pest Control is a residential home services provider specializing in termite inspections, termite repairs, and pest control.

The Goal: From Termite Inspections to Pest Control Services

When we first met with Cal Oaks Termite, they'd been involved in termite inspections and repairs for over 35+ years. And, whilst they absolutely dominated the termite inspection market and had done amazingly well there, they realized something important…

Termite inspections and repair work, are always project work, which has no monthly recurring revenue.

Every month, and every project, starts from scratch.

They Wanted to Grow Their Pest Control Business

Cal Oaks termite wanted to start growing the pest control side of things. Doing so, would mean they could begin building their local monthly contract work for pest control home services, and increase MRR.

When we first took a look at their online presence, they had zero visibility in pest control.

They also had a very outdated website with no SEO, it was not secure, was not mobile responsive, and they had no map rankings.

Why Local SEO for Pest Control Companies Matters

This is an extremely competitive industry, that takes people just a few moments to decide who to call.

Just being there isn’t enough. Being found first, is the goal.

The outcome is simple:

  • Higher rankings → more local visibility
  • More visibility → more inbound calls
  • Inbound calls → more monthly contracts

He who gets found first, wins.

Pest Control in Southern California is Extremely Competitive

We have an abundance of amazing weather here in Southern California. A side-effect of all that great weather is that we also have an abundance of pests to control. From black widows to ants, wasps, rodents, and cockroaches… pest control is big business in SoCal.

Doing our initial research we found that the pest control business is extremely competitive. Much like HVAC, and some of the other home services, pest control is big money, and big business.

All the pest control companies had pretty modern, effective websites, and some even had really good SEO.

Most of the pest control companies did pretty well managing their online reputations.

They had a lot of reviews on Google and (as you can imagine), they were mostly 5 stars. As with many other local service businesses, people are happy when the problem is solved. And, people are typically REALLY happy when you kill their pests like spiders, cockroaches, rats, mice, etc.

The only silver-lining here was, there was plenty of business to go around.

Initial Keyword Research for Pest Control SEO

Keyword research in the target cities showed a high volume for people searching for good pest control companies in the area.

After discovering how competitive pest control was locally, the competition out there, and what we were up against, we put together a plan.

Cal Oaks Termite needed a strong online presence.

The Local SEO for Pest Control Website Package

The website build for Cal Oaks needed to be robust, with a lot of content. To compete, they needed at least a 9-10 page website, with at least 1 service page for each service they offered.

Each page needed to be really great, with well-written content copy, and great on-page SEO.

They opted for a 5 page site design to begin with, and to keep adding service pages each month, as we went along.

Why Local SEO (Not Ads)?

  • Pest control is a high-volume local search service
  • Local SEO drives recurring contract work
  • Maps rankings drive inbound calls without monthly ad spend

Online Reputation Management Package

As the pest control industry is one where service-people come to your home and fix a problem, it’s really easy to generate a lot of reviews.

The local pest control competitor’s online reputations, showed exactly that.

Most companies had hundreds of reviews. Another one even had over 1,000.

As reviews are so extremely important on Google Maps rankings, we put a reputation management package in place.

Shared Graphics regularly text and email Cal Oaks clients for reviews, and also respond to any reviews Cal Oaks have.

Local SEO Results that Speak For Themselves

As of writing this case study, we’re still adding service pages to the Cal Oaks Termite website. So, the website is not quite complete yet, but we’ve still been able to see some really great progress so far.

The original goal of this website, was to rank for pest control in the city of Murrieta, CA.

This was so that Cal Oaks could generate some enquiries for pest control.

We launched the new website in September 2025. And, as of January 2026 (just 90 days after the initial launch) we’ve only added a few of the pest control pages, but our results so far have been amazing.

4.42x Increase in Keyword Rankings for Pest Control

When we first started working with them, they were ranked for only 50 keywords. And NONE of those keywords were ranked on the first page of Google.

After just over 90 days, Cal Oaks Termite are now currently ranking for 221 keywords.

This is a 4.42x increase in the total amount of keywords they rank for, at the time of writing this post. This has increased since we first collated this data about a week ago, which are the numbers quoted in the before and after table, at the bottom of this post.

Graph Showing the Amount of Keywords This Website Ranks on Google For Today

Not only that, but for many of these keywords, Cal Oaks Termite are already ranking on page 1.

They are ranked in the top 3 results on organic search (where 68.7% of website clicks go), for these keywords:

Pest Control Murrieta: Position 3
Rodent Control Murrieta CA: Position 3
Murrieta Pest Control: Position 3
Exterminator Murrieta: Position 3
Exterminator Murrieta CA: Position 4
Rodent Control Murrieta: Position 3

These are all extremely relevant keywords, with buyers intent. So, these are exactly the kinds of keywords anyone's searching on Google for 'Pest Control Murrieta' unless they have a problem they need taken care of very soon.

These keywords are exactly the things people are searching for, right at the moment they want to hire a pest control company.

Google statistics show that 90% of searchers buy within a week of their local query.

76% of “near me” mobile searches lead to a store visit within 24 hours.

So, being in this position is extremely desirable for Cal Oaks.

Of course… ranking for keywords is great! But, if that didn't amount to any more traffic, it's meaningless.

Only, we got that, too…

4x Increase in Web Traffic

September 1st 2025, Cal Oaks Termite’s website had 17 organic site visits.

On February 1st, 2026, this local pest control company website had 70 organic site visits straight from Google.

This is now over a 4x increase in daily website visits, just in 90 days. Just a few days ago, it was only a 3x increase, and rapidly growing.

Google Maps Rankings

We knew due to the high amount of reviews for competitors on Google Maps, we would need a heavy focus on review generation for Cal Oaks.

We’ve been focused on that goal, and we have already gained a jump from position 9 on Google Maps to position 6.

Getting into the Pack 3 (top 3 results) will take a little longer for the Google Maps results, due to the amount of reviews needed, but we’re confident we can get them there very soon.

They are also now showing up in AI results on Chat GPT.

AI Overviews, LLM and ChatGPT Citation Rankings

Also, this website has 2 pages being cited in Google AI Overviews, and ChatGPT, and has had 3 mentions in the last month.

From nothing at all, to being cited in AI, is huge for future protection from losing traffic to AI.

Frequently Asked Questions About Local SEO for Pest Control Companies

How long does local SEO take to work for pest control companies?

Results vary by market competitiveness, but Cal Oaks saw measurable improvements within 90 days, including multiple page 1 rankings and 4x traffic growth.

In most markets, you can expect to see initial movement (page 2-3 rankings, increased impressions) within 60 days.

Significant results like top 3 positions typically appear between 90-120 days.

Full market dominance, especially reaching the top 3 on Google Maps, may take 4-6 months as reviews accumulate and domain authority builds.

The key is good research, and consistent execution: content creation, citation building, and review generation all working together.

How many pages does a pest control website need to rank in competitive markets?

For competitive areas like Southern California, we recommend 9-10 pages minimum as a foundation.

This should include: a strong homepage, about page, contact page, and dedicated service pages for each offering—general pest control, rodent control, termite services, ant control, spider control, bed bug treatment, etc.

Each service page should be 800-1,500 words with proper on-page SEO, local keywords, and clear calls-to-action.

Cal Oaks started with 5 core pages and is strategically adding service pages monthly to expand their keyword footprint and capture more search traffic.

More pages = more keyword opportunities = more ways to be found.

What's more important for local rankings: website content or Google reviews?

Both are absolutely essential, but they serve different purposes and you can't dominate with just one. Website content with proper on-page SEO drives your organic search rankings (SERP).

This is what gets you on page 1 for searches like "pest control Murrieta." Google reviews, on the other hand, heavily influence your Google Maps pack positions... those top 3 results that show up with the map.

Cal Oaks needed simultaneous strategies: robust content for SERP visibility and aggressive review generation for Maps rankings.

Think of it this way: content gets you found, reviews get you chosen.

You need both working together to truly dominate your local market.

Can you rank for pest control without running Google Ads?

Absolutely. While Google Ads provide immediate visibility, local SEO builds long-term, sustainable traffic without ongoing ad spend.

Cal Oaks achieved top 3 organic rankings without spending a dime on ads, avoiding the $3,000-5,000 per month that typical pest control companies spend on Google Ads in competitive markets like Southern California.

The difference? Ads stop working the second you stop paying.

SEO compounds over time... your rankings improve, your domain authority grows, and your traffic increases month after month.

After 6-12 months of solid SEO work, you'll have a 24/7 lead generation machine that runs without continuous ad budget.

Why do some pest control companies rank higher even though they're newer or smaller?

Google doesn't care how long you've been in business. It cares about relevance, authority, and user experience.

A newer company can outrank an established business if they have: better on-page SEO (proper title tags, meta descriptions, structured data), more relevant content (service pages targeting specific keywords), a faster, mobile-friendly website, more recent and higher-quality Google reviews, consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) citations across the web, and regular content updates.

This is exactly why Cal Oaks, despite being 35+ years old, wasn't ranking. Their outdated website with no SEO was invisible to Google.

Once we fixed those factors, they jumped to page 1 in 90 days.

How many Google reviews do I need to rank in the Maps pack?

There's no magic number, but in competitive pest control markets, you typically need to be within range of your top competitors.

If the top 3 companies in your area have 200-500+ reviews, you'll struggle to break into the pack with only 20-30 reviews.

The good news? Review velocity (how quickly you're getting new reviews) and recency (how recent your reviews are) really matter.

A company with 150 reviews from the past 6 months can easily outrank a company with 300 reviews that are 3+ years old. Similarly, it's better to have 200 real reviews consistently from over the past 2 years, than to have 200 5 star reviews that abruptly stopped 2 years ago (looking like you went out of business).

For Cal Oaks, we implemented an aggressive review generation system.

We texted and emailed their customers after each service, to steadily build their review count and climb from position #9 to #6 in just 90 days.

What's the difference between organic rankings and Google Maps rankings?

These are two separate systems with different ranking factors.

Organic rankings (SERP) are the traditional blue links that appear below the map. Tthese are primarily influenced by website content, on-page SEO, backlinks, and domain authority.

Google Maps rankings (the "Local Pack" - top 3 results with the map) are influenced by proximity to the searcher, Google Business Profile optimization, review quantity/quality/recency, citations, and NAP consistency.

You can rank #1 organically but not appear in the Maps pack at all, or vice versa.

The most successful pest control companies (like Cal Oaks is becoming) dominate both, capturing traffic from organic searches AND Maps searches.

Do I need to blog regularly to rank for pest control keywords?

Not necessarily. Blogging can help, but it's not required for local service businesses like pest control. What matters more is having comprehensive service pages that answer searcher intent.

For example, your "Rodent Control Murrieta" page should cover: what rodents you handle, your treatment process, pricing transparency, why choose you, service area coverage, and clear calls-to-action.

That's more valuable than 20 generic blog posts about "5 signs you have rats."

Cal Oaks achieved top 3 rankings with zero blog posts. Just strategic, well-optimized service pages.

If you have time and resources for blogging, great. But if you're starting out, focus on nailing your core service pages first.

How much does local SEO cost compared to Google Ads?

Local SEO typically costs $1,500-3,500/month for ongoing services (website maintenance, content creation, citation building, review management, reporting). Google Ads for pest control in competitive markets runs $3,000-5,000+/month in ad spend alone, plus management fees.

The key difference? SEO is an investment that compounds. Your rankings improve month after month, and if you pause service, your rankings don't disappear overnight.

Ads are purely pay-to-play. The moment you stop paying, your traffic drops to zero.

After 12 months of SEO, you might be generating 50-100 qualified leads per month organically.

To get that same traffic from ads would cost $5,000-8,000/month indefinitely.

SEO pays for itself.

What happens if I stop paying for SEO services after ranking well?

Your rankings won't disappear immediately, but they will gradually decline over time. Especially in competitive markets.

SEO requires ongoing maintenance: adding fresh content, building new citations, generating reviews, monitoring competitors, fixing technical issues, and adapting to Google algorithm updates.

If you stop, competitors who ARE actively doing SEO will eventually overtake you.

That said, SEO has residual value. Even if you pause services, you'll maintain some visibility for months. Compare this to Google Ads where traffic stops instantly when you stop paying.

Our recommendation? Once you achieve strong rankings, you can often reduce to a maintenance-level SEO package rather than stopping completely.
